Johnny English

Johnny English
Would you believe... that Johnny English is the most amazingly funny satire ever made about spies? [No.] Would you believe... that it's a pretty funny spoof of the Bond movies? [No.] Would you believe... that it's a sporadically amusing lampoon in the same vein as Austin Powers? [No.] Would you believe... that it's basically a dog that should have been released in August with all of the other late-summer refuse? [Yes.]

I didn't have high hopes for Johnny English. After all, there have been so many 007 parodies in the last few years that the genre is oversaturated. (In fact, with Die Another Day, even the "legitimate" Bond movies have gotten into the act. That movie was as close to self-parody as the venerable series has gotten since The Man with the Golden Gun.) If there was cause for optimism, however, it had to do with Rowan Atkinson, the gifted British comedian behind such ventures as "Black Adder" and "Mr. Bean." Sadly, although Atkinson can remove his trousers from underneath a bathing suit on national TV, he can't invigorate this overused premise. Johnny English is a tamer Austin Powers crossed with "Get Smart," with very little in the way of effective humor.

High Tension

High Tension
When I first saw High Tension at the 2003 Toronto Film Festival, I wrote the following: " [High Tension] has virtually no chance of finding a North American distributor. After all, what's the market for slasher films with subtitles?" Imagine my surprise to hear that Lions Gate Films had picked up the North American rights and were determined to release the film unedited (which garnered an NC-17 rating) and subtitled. Fast-forward 18 moths. Apparently, more financial concerns have cause Lions Gate to take a step back. The version of High Tension that is finally getting a United States release has been slightly trimmed (to get an R rating) and dubbed into English. The dubbing isn't as big an issue as it might be in another movie. There's not a lot of dialogue in High Tension, so the dubbing offers only a minimal distraction. For the most part, the characters are trying to be quiet, not engaging in long or meaningful conversations. The main reason to see this movie has nothing to do with what the characters say, but with their horrific descent into the macabre.

The AbsentMinded Professor

The AbsentMinded Professor
One of Disney's most entertaining forays into live-action, this hit family comedy stars Fred MacMurray as a college professor so forgetful that he missed his own wedding twice. He creates an extremely resilient flying rubber, dubbed "Flubber," and manages to make his old Model-T bounce all the way to Washington, DC, where it is mistaken for a UFO, as well as helping the college basketball team win the big game with Flubber-powered sneakers. MacMurray is a lot of fun in the title role, ably supported by a cast including Tommy Kirk,

Broken English

Broken English
For her feature debut, writer/director Zoe Cassavetes has elected to tread into territory where even the best stories feels like clichés. Broken English is competently made and features a solid performance from lead actress Parker Posey, but it's the kind of film that will resonate only with a tiny fraction of the available audience. Unless a viewer's age and situation mirrors that of Posey's Nora Wilder, odds are that this movie will generate a sense of déjà vu. Casavetes tells her tale, but it's one we've already seen, and she doesn't bring much that's new or fresh to the narrative.

Nightstalker (2009)

Nightstalker (2009)
This time the subject matter of Lommells grainy handi-cam composition is Richard Ramirez, dubbed The Night Stalker by the media, a serial killer who killed somewhere in the neighborhood of 16 souls during his reign of terror in Los Angeles back in the Eighties. We first learn that Ramirezs unsavory uncle practically raised him to grow up a pot-smoking woman-hater. Moving from El Paso, Texas to Los Angeles, California as a young adult, Ramirez falls in with a coven of devil worshippers. To hear them talk about their satanic freedom-to-do-whatever-they-want ideals, they sound less like satanists and more like Goth hippies. Getting involved in satanism proves to be the trigger that inspired Ramirez to cross the line and begin sneaking into the homes of mildly chunky women with big boobs and gunning them down as they shower...

English Patient

English Patient
For those who have forgotten the depth of romance and passion that the movies are capable of conveying, Anthony Minghella's The English Patient can remedy the situation. This is one of the year's most unabashed and powerful love stories, using flawless performances, intelligent dialogue, crisp camera work, and loaded glances to attain a level of eroticism and emotional connection that many similar films miss.

Is The English Patient melodramatic? Of course, but it's the sort of finely-honed melodrama that embraces viewers rather than smothering them. And the movie never resorts to cheap, manipulative tactics. This well-crafted story, brought to the screen with great care by British playwright and director Anthony Minghella (Truly, Madly, Deeply) and based on the prize-winning novel by Michael Ondaatje, serves up the love of Almasy (Ralph Fiennes) and Katharine (Kristin Scott Thomas) in a way that is simultaneously epic and intimate.
