Live Free or Die
Its not the crime, its the cover-up. In small-town, hard-scrabble New Hampshire, foul-mouthed all-talk slacker John Rugged Rudgate fancies himself a criminal. When a local plumber stares him down at a pub, Rugged vows revenge, pouring brake fluid in the mans water supply. When the man dies from unrelated causes, Rugged and his side-kick, the even dimmer Jeff, try to cover up what they think is murder. One bad decision begets another.

Blue Hill Avenue
Four friends—Tristan (the leader), Simon (the right hand man),E-Bone (the hot head) and Money (the mediator)--are street smart kids growing up in the tough Mattapan section of Boston in the 1980s. Starting out as small-time dope dealers on Blue Hill Avenue in Mattapan Square, they eventually go to work for Benny, a major player in the Boston crime scene. As the four friends grow up and become the biggest dealers in the city, things become increasingly heated: Tristan's wife wants him to leave the business because she's pregnant, Tristan finds out his sister is hooked on drugs and is alienated from his family, Simon becomes obsessed with a near-death experience and expects to die, cops dog their tracks trying every trick in and out of the book to catch them, and Benny, their main supplier, wants them out of the business for good. Worse, it becomes clear one of the four is trying to sell the others out to the cops. In the end, Tristan faces Benny down, after losing his friends, and is able to get out of the business—and the life—for good.

Into the Blue
On some level, I feel that I should have been able to enjoy Into the Blue. It has all the elements one would expect from a "so bad it's good" feature: cheesy dialogue, a script that could have been written by two chimpanzees, acting that would make a high school drama teacher cringe, and lots of tight female bodies poured into tiny bikinis. Despite all of that, however, I found Into the Blue to be a real trial, although it appears to have a weird ability to suspend time. Every time I checked my watch, the hands seemed to be in the same place. Director John Stockwell, who has a fetish for movies with "blue" in the title (he also was in charge of Blue Crush), may not have found a formula for entertainment, but he has discovered a means to slow time. That would be a good thing if Into the Blue was less tedious.

Blue Kite
"I finished shooting The Blue Kite in 1992. But while I was involved in post-production, several official organizations involved with China's film industry screened the film. They decided that it had a problem concerning its political 'leanings,' and prevented its completion. The fact that it can appear today seems like a miracle... The stories in the film are real, and they are related with total sincerity. What worries me is that it is precisely a fear of reality and sincerity that has led to the ban on such stories being told."
- Tian Zhuangzhuang, director of The Blue Kite

Devil in a Blue Dress

Devil in a Blue Dress
It seems that in a period detective story, it's a prerequisite for the main character to narrate the proceedings. In Devil in a Blue Dress, writer/director Carl Franklin apparently intended this conceit as a tribute to the Dashiell Hammett/Raymond Chandler school of cinematic potboilers. Denzel Washington's running commentary is peppered with genre-specific cliches, and this voiceover aids atmosphere-building as much as story advancement.

I don’t know how to scuba diva. I don’t even own a wet suit, the main reason I had to postpone my plans for participating in some sprint triathlons this year. My brother learned how from the Boy Scouts and he’s one of the few people I know who is dive certified. I wish I could, but I never go anywhere worth diving, so instead I watch movies like this, now ready for you on DVD.

Blue Chips

Blue Chips
An underdog team gets an infusion of outside talent (either a player or a coach) and goes from the bottom to the top, winning the championship in a game whose result is never in doubt. This is the plot of dozens of sports-related motion pictures, including Hoosiers, one of the best basketball films. It is not, however, the plot of Blue Chips, a rare example of an entry into this genre that attempts to be honest and unique.
