Stone Cold

Stone Cold
Some movies have ďfeaturesĒ that make it obvious when they were made. Stone Cold, a movie from 1991, pretty much follows the mold of eighties and early nineties action movies. It has the sex appeal, a simple plot, and violence that made movies of that time seem interesting to the majority of males. While it offers violence and sex appeal, it does have something of a story.

Connors' War

Connors' War
I'm not the biggest fan of straight-to-DVD movies. From past experiences, I can safely say that 9.9 times out of 10 if it was a straight-to-DVD release, it will be a bad movie (that .1 being Equilibrium). So of course it surprises me to say this, but Connors' War actually wasn't that bad. In fact, it was almost good.

Stick it

Stick it
It must be hard to make movies like Stick It - or rather, to make movies like Stick It well. This film is so formulaic that the main character actually points out the formula roughly one-third of the way through the movie, and yet, writer/director Jessica Bendinger (Bring it On ) brings an inventiveness and spirit to the process which rises above form. It's the saltwater taffy of movies: sweet, airy, and light enough to make you forget that sugars will rot your teeth. And if it leaves little aftertaste, well, some movies, like some candies, are best enjoyed in the moment anyway.

Vampires Suck

Vampires Suck
Vampires Suck is the latest in a long line of cheaply produced, minimum effort parody movies. In fact itís the fifth just directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. In recent years the Hollywood mockery machine has tackled horror movies, superhero movies, teen movies, romance movies, and theyíve even parodied vampire movies before too. But this one, itís the best of the bunch. Not because itís good, but because itís only unbelievably boring while all the others have been unbearably irritating.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
As Iíve gotten older, Iíve gone back and watched a lot of movies that I enjoyed when I was a younginí and Iíve found a couple of things to be true. Movies that I overall enjoyed (ET, FERRIS BUELLERíS DAY OFF, etc.) hold up well today and remain some of my favorite films. On the other hand, movies that I enjoyed as a kid because they sparked a particular emotion, i.e. they were scary, funny or sad, Iíve found do not hold up well over time. ACE VENTURA came out when I was in junior high and at the time, it was comedy gold. Other than maybe WAYNEíS WORLD, I canít think of a movie that I quoted more. However, a lot has changed since I first saw Ace Ventura grace the big screen and some of his antics just arenít funny anymore.

Spoiler

Spoiler
Spoiler is one of the most depressing movies I've ever seen. That doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad movie - there are many good movies that happen to be given that label. One of my favorite movies is Seconds, a drama with science fiction overtones starring Rock Hudson, that has been called one of the most depressing movies ever made. Spoiler, however, is different from almost all depressing movies by it not really being a drama, but more of a science fiction tale with action/adventure overtones. Plus, the star of the movie is B movie martial arts star Gary Daniels - not exactly the kind of person you'd expect to be in a downbeat movie such as this. Especially since his martial art talents are pretty much ignored here.

The Expedition

The Expedition
I present somewhat of an anomaly in the world of horror critics, because I am unwilling to whore myself out for quotes on a DVD case or a movie website. There is a reason for this: because I hate bad movies much like the devil hates virtue. The opportunity to make a film is much too precious to be lazy. And I wouldnít be a dick about the whole thing if the movies werenít dicks to me first.

If sword'n'sandal movies from the toga-wearing classical world generally make you giggle or groan Ė or even if they don't Ė then this could be the film for you. Alejandro Amenábar has made an ambitious, cerebral and complex movie set in fourth-century Alexandria, the era in which the famous library was destroyed.

Metalheads: The Good, the Bad, and the Evil

Metalheads: The Good, the Bad, and the Evil
Metal has too long been misrepresented in movies. This tragi-comedy brings to light all you need to see! Warring The term politically correct does NOT exist in a metalheads dictionary. This movie contains no Ebonics or baggy pants. Not to be viewed

Devil's Den

Devil's Den
Every once and a great while you watch a film and for some reason you know you shouldn't be liking it. It's just so cheesy, so over the top, so obvious, and just over all cheesy. But whenever I see movies like that it brings me back to my favorite time in horror history, the 80s. Films during that period were great because all they really needed to have was some boobs and some blood. They were all shot on film and had at least a half way decent plot. The good ones anyway. Devils Den is definetly one of those movies that you just grab a couple of friends, pick up a keg, sit back and enjoy.

Super Capers

Super Capers
If Super Capers were a multilevel satire, perhaps a spoof of spoof movies, then not being funny would be a brilliant stroke of commentary. Presumably it's just supposed to be the one-layered spoof, in which case not being funny actually doesn't work in its favor.

The story tells the origin of wannabe hero Ed Gruberman (Justin Whalin), who joins the Super Capers to learn how to really fight evil. Along the way, they mimic popular movies and portray superpowers as ridiculous pratfalls instead of badass heroics.

Wrongfully Accused

Wrongfully Accused
There is little doubt that, over the last two weeks, Warner Brothers has established some kind of low water mark for quality in motion picture releases. Never can I recall one distributor releasing two unwatchable movies on back-to-back weekends. However, with The Avengers and Wrongfully Accused, Warner Brothers has achieved that dubious distinction. Wrongfully Accused is a mind- numbingly awful motion picture that has a better chance of making a viewer physically ill than of provoking a genuine laugh.
