Semi-Pro

Semi-Pro
When it comes to comedy, Will Ferrell is a Jeckyl & Hyde. When he's "on," he can be hilarious, but when he's off, he's like a drunk at a bar yelling loud, unfunny jokes at his equally inebriated buddies. And, while those guys might laugh at him, they're the only ones. Unfortunately, for Semi-Pro, Ferrell is that guy at the bar. This movie struggles for laughs, in part because the writing is lazy with too much of the humor being obvious and easily telegraphed, and in part because Semi-Pro is obsessed with being a sports film rather than merely parodying one. Admittedly, both approaches have been done so often that it's difficult to find a fresh angle, but there would seem to be more unplowed territor in the latter category than the former. Nevertheless, that's not where first-time director Kent Alterman and screenwriter Scot Armstrong take this movie. Instead of a satire, they give us a tired, tedious victory-for-the-underdog story, and the unevenness of Ferrell's comedy makes it less appealing.

Churchill: The Hollywood Years
This is a comedy involving a group of the American filmmakers who decided to make a movie about Winston Churchilles life but missed with the casting. They find out that an actor to play the key role is a robust, unattractive cigar smoker they draw in an American G.I. as he seemed to be a better-looking actor to play the part of Churchill. A new interpretation the makers developed depicts a handsome Churchill falling in love with Princess Elizabeth, who is herself involved in the war as an undercover agent.

Barry Levinson had an idea, and a pretty good one at that: take an actor, have him assume the role of a vigilante, and, as public adulation of his assumed personae escalates, blur the line between being a vigilante and acting the part. Unfortunately, the idea is all that Levinson had, because the final result -- Jimmy Hollywood -- is a somnolent mess.

The Girlfriend Experience

The Girlfriend Experience
Steven Soderbergh makes two kinds of movies -- the Hollywood kind and the indie kind. Though let's be straight here: Even Soderbergh's indie films are essentially Hollywood. There's no risk involved with them from a financial perspective, and from the creative side they continue to lend the filmmaker the artsy street cred that allows him to go off and make big fluff films like Ocean's Whatever with impunity.

The Girlfriend Experience comes from the indie side of Soderbergh, a low-budget, quickly-made digital picture starring a cast of non-movie stars (though, in this case, not necessarily non-stars, depending on your knowledge of porn). It's far more enigmatic and challenging than any wide release multiplex picture you'll see these days, but does that automatically mean that it's better than those Hollywood types of movies?

I Sell the Dead

I Sell the Dead
In the vast pantheon of Hollywood movie titles, I Sell the Dead ain't bad. It's a strange, off-beat title that at first seems a bit unwieldy before eventually piquing your interest. How exactly does one sell the dead? And to whom do you sell them? Any film with "dead" in the title has got to be a horror film, right? Yet I Sell the Dead is just so downright odd that might it be, one supposes, a horror-comedy? Are the dead actually dead? Are they un-dead? Does selling the dead pay well, or do you have to take a side job? If the dead you've sold turn out to be un-dead, do you give refunds?
