What's the deal with artificial insemination as the subject matter for comedies this year? So far we've had the 'romantic comedy' The Back-Up Plan with Jennifer Lopez as the woman who opts to take the alternate route to pregnancy, and The Kids Are All Right with Julianne Moore and Annette Bening as a lesbian couple who twice use Mark Ruffalo's sperm in order to become parents. And now we've got Jennifer Aniston in The Switch as the woman who wants a baby but doesn't have a partner available to fulfill one-half of the necessary requirements needed in order to get pregnant.

Valley of Angels
As far as the movies go, thrillers and action movies are a dime a dozen. As genres they have been solid standbys for good entertainment since Cagney and Bogart came onscreen. Yet it is all too easy to make a thriller that is high on violence and attitude and low on story and character. And now in the post Tarantino era, it seems like every hip, young director comes on the scene with his crime opus that is supposed to set the world on fire with cooler than liquid nitrogen dialogue and badass gun fights. But if there’s one thing every filmmaker should realize is this, there is only one Tarantino and the multitudes of copycats trying to follow in his footsteps have easily proven the point. Thankfully, a new talent has sprung up from the ranks and has crafted a debut feature that is both as confident and skillful as Reservoir Dogs, while containing the spiritual contemplation often inherent in Scorsese’s films. The director’s name is Jon Rosten and his film is the ironically titled Valley of Angels.

Phoebe in Wonderland
“Phoebe in Wonderland,” a tremblingly sensitive family drama that decomposes in its last half-hour, examines the difference between the growing pains of a gifted child and the possibility of more serious mental illness. When 9-year-old Phoebe Lichten (Elle Fanning) auditions to play Alice in a school production of “Alice in Wonderland,” childish superstition drives her to act out self-punishing rituals to earn the part. In one she repeatedly washes her hands until they are raw. Another involves executing painstakingly counted-out dance steps on the sidewalk without landing on a crack.

Street Kings: Motor City
In the spring of 2008, a modestly-budgeted cop thriller called Street Kings grossed an equally modest sixty-five million dollars worldwide on the strength of an A-list cast. The ensemble included Keanu Reeves, Chris Evans, Hugh Laurie, and Forest Whitaker. New on Blu-ray is a sequel that bears no relation to the first, other than genre and name. Street Kings 2: Motor City has only one marquee name, Ray Liotta. As the title suggests, rather than the earlier film's Los Angeles setting, this one is set in Detroit. Rest assured, if you haven't seen the 2008 film you won't be lost watching the new one.

“Pandemic” sees Japanese cinema again taking on the time honoured disaster movie formula, this time with the tale of a deadly virus threatening the country as various stars try to save themselves and their loved ones. Very much in the style of the 1995 Hollywood outing “Outbreak”, the film was directed by Zeze Takahisa, (best known for the offbeat vampire effort “Moon Child”), with actor Tsumabuki Satoshi (“Dororo”) and actress Dan Rei (“Love and Honor”) in the lead roles, and a supporting ensemble cast including Sato Koichi (“The Magic Hour”), Ikewaki Chizuru (“Strawberry Shortcakes”), Fuji Tatsuya (“Flavor of Happiness”), Kuninaka Ryoko (“Train Man”), and Mitsuishi Ken. Arriving shortly on region 2 DVD via MVM, the film was originally released domestically back in 2009, at a time when global virus scares were still very much making headline news, and given recent events in Japan, its scenes of eerily empty cities and destruction still ring sadly true.
Tsumabuki Satoshi plays a kindly young doctor called Matsuoka, whose latest patient is a man with what seem to be fairly obvious flu symptoms. However, the usual tests come back false, and the unfortunate fellow is soon bleeding from his eyes and nose, before going into violent convulsions and dying. It quickly becomes clear that this is only the start of a new and particularly infectious pandemic, with the hospital being quarantined after a number of staff members also start to show signs of having contracted the killer bug. Although the media latch onto the idea that the virus is a new strain of flu caused by contaminated poultry, Matsuoka and a World Health Organization officer (Dan Rei), who just happens to be his former lover, trace it back to an island in the Northern Philippines, desperately racing against time to find a cure before it can spread to the rest of the country.
Sometimes movies don't have to be complicated. They don't have to "say" anything or espouse a particular philosophy. There doesn't have to be a deeper meaning beyond exploring slices in the lives of several unpretentious characters. Such is the case with director/co-writer Danièle Thompson's Avenue Montaigne, a French "comedy" that follows the interaction of a young girl in the lives of three people and how, at times inadvertently, she changes them. The film uses effective acting, deft dialogue, and a sly wit to entertain, if not educate.

Touching the Void
Truth, they say, is stranger than fiction… and also potentially more nail-biting and harder to believe. Touching the Void is an extreme example of this - a man versus nature epic so amazing that, if it was presented in a strictly narrative format, viewers would doubt its veracity. To capture this story in a way that would do it justice, British filmmaker Kevin Macdonald (the documentarian responsible for One Day in September, about the terrorist attack on the 1972 Israeli Olympic team in Munich) has blended elements of docudrama and documentary into a satisfying whole that will keep even the most stoic movie-goer gripping the armrest throughout.

I Could Never Be Your Woman
Considering the talent involved - writer/director Amy Heckerling (Clueless) and actors Michelle Pfeiffer and Paul Rudd - I Could Never Be Your Woman could contend for the most high-profile motion picture yet to take the direct-to-DVD route. This wasn't intended to be the path traveled by this motion picture; had all gone well, it would have been on multiplex screens a year or two ago. Financial mismanagement and bad decisions made the movie unreleasable and it languished until The Weinstein Company executed their home video rights. The result is a mixed blessing for Heckerling - her movie gets to see the light of day but it does so with the unenviable "direct-to-DVD" label. It's good enough to warrant better than the curt dismissal it is likely to receive in some corners.

I define a "boo!" moment as an instant in a movie when there is a loud sound, usually accompanied by a musical stinger and occasionally in concert with the fast pass of an unidentifiable object across a portion of the camera's field of view. The idea behind a "boo!" moment is to startle viewers. Most horror fans are conversant with "boo!" moments but if you're confused, The Messengers offers a primer. It's wall-to-wall "boo!" moments with almost nothing else to recommend it. By the end of the film, these instances have become so frequent that they're more comedic than horrific. (People in the audience took the "boo" to heart because that's how they reacted when the movie ended.)
Half Past Dead 2
The original Half Past Dead was an obvious butt-scraping that took place in Alcatraz prison and starred Steven Seagal and Ja Rule (the rapper). It was horrible, made only a buffalo nickel at the box office, and ruined a lot of people’s lives. Well, someone with money decided that it didn’t, and chose to green-light the sequel, Half Past Dead 2. Of course, Seagal and Ja have much better things to do these days, as do the rest of the cast, and the people who allowed filming in or around Alcatraz. No sweat, it can still be done. It’ll just take a little ingenuity, some luck, and a few people who aren’t dead to replace the cast. Plot and script aren’t really concerns, because any idiot can come up with those.

Milenge Milenge took its time to come to the theatres. Yes, it is old fashioned in theme. But not dated. The material which must have been quite bulky by the time Kaushik was done with shooting has been cut and pasted with restrained enthusiasm. What we have is a paper-thin, sometimes cute at times annoying rom-com where Destiny plays a pivotal part. Kiss-mat, anyone? Yup, intimacy is fugitive between Shahid and Kareena. But they nonetheless look like a real pair.
