A television reporter unearths a shocking secret while investigating the horrific murder of two rural Wisconsin twins in this reality shocker purportedly assembled from the found footage of a missing news crew. Meredith Phillips thought she had found the story that was going to make her famous. But now the deeper she probes for facts, the more obvious it becomes that she's digging her own grave. When the terrifying truth is finally revealed, it will already be too late for Meredith and her crew. For the rest of us, the horror has only just begun. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
Everything Must Go
As their careers develop, many comedians yearn to cross over into serious dramatic roles, if only on occasion. This has happened with John Cleese, Steve Martin, Robin Williams, Tom Hanks, Jim Carrey, and Adam Sandler. Some are more successful than others, but expectations play as big a part in the actor's reception as the actual performance. Everything Must Go is not Will Ferrell's first "straight" part (previous serious - or at least semi-serious - endeavors include Stranger than Fiction and Winter Passing), but it's the first time he has consciously leeched all but the most subtle humor from his character. There are not a lot of laughs in Dan Rush's directorial debut, nor are there intended to be. Rush keeps the tone as light as possible, but no one would mistake this for anything other than a quirky, character-based drama.

Hellboy is director Guillermo del Toro's second venture behind the cameras for a comic-book themed motion picture. However, although the hyper-stylized setting and kinetic action sequences share a kinship with those in Blade 2, Hellboy showcases a lighter tone with a hero who doesn't take himself as seriously. In fact, while Hellboy doesn't quite cross the line into open comedy, it comes close. The film bears more of a resemblance to Ghostbusters and Men in Black (with a little of The Mummy thrown in for good measure) than to a traditional superhero motion picture. This isn't Batman or Superman.
Capturing the Friedmans
Various articles have labeled Capturing the Friedmans as a narrative documentary, a crime investigation, a meditation upon the nature of truth, and an expose of the failings of the United States judicial system. First and foremost, however, it is an American tragedy – a look inside a criminal case that shines a light into the dark, ugly corners of suburbia, then turns that same light on various other aspects of crime & punishment. Like the unforgettable Paradise Lost, this movie shows that the legal system is often cruelly unconcerned about the concept of justice, and that a plea of "guilty" or "not guilty" doesn't necessarily reflect whether the defendant did or didn't commit the crime.

In my review of Woody Allen's previous misfire, Melinda and Melinda, I wrote the following: "Lately, Allen's films have sunk into a state of heightened mediocrity - sporadically entertaining, but often disappointing, at least for those clinging to the hope that Allen will return to 'form.' I no longer expect great things from a Woody Allen movie…" Indeed, it has been over a decade since Allen has produced a memorable motion picture. Match Point puts an end to the drought, and does so in an impressive and unexpected fashion. Not only could one argue that this is the best "serious" work the director has ever attempted, but it's presented in a way that even the most seasoned Allen fan will have difficulty recognizing the iconic filmmaker's fingerprints.

When it comes to bringing their top-line superheroes to the big screen, DC has been lagging behind Marvel in recent years. While Marvel has aggressively built franchises, DC has shown little inclination to attempt more than occasional new installments for their Big Two: Batman and Superman. Green Lantern, which provides a motion picture introduction for another member of the Justice League, is designed to change that. Although the idea of a Green Lantern movie has been floating around for about 15 years, it wasn't until after the phenomenal success of The Dark Knight that it was (pun intended) green lit. Considering all the time this concept has been percolating, however, the result is disappointing. As origin stories go, this one would seem to have the potential to be innovative. Unfortunately, the four (!) credited screenwriters and director Martin Campbell do their best to force Green Lantern's uniqueness into the expected story mold. The result makes the movie seem assembled from bits and pieces of other superhero yarns rather than existing on a plane of its own.

During the latter years of the 20th century, no sports figure was more compelling and controversial than Mike Tyson, who scaled the heights of unifying boxing's heavyweight championships and descended into the hell of scandal and crime. With Tyson, director James Toback has provided a forum in which Tyson can tell his story. Undoubtedly, some of what is presented in this documentary has been sanitized to improve Tyson's reputation, but the film's subject is surprisingly thoughtful and speaks frankly about his womanizing, alcohol and drug addiction, bouts of mental instability, and criminal activity.
Q & A is testimony to the validity of the old adage: a good story, when well told, can never be told too many times. With this movie, director Sidney Lumet doesn't bring anything radical to the screen. The premise - a decorated cop discovered to be dirty - has been utilized to the point of overuse, where it has become a cliché. But that doesn't stop the filmmakers of Q & A from providing a different angle on a tale that, although unevenly presented, is at times gripping. Performances are the heart of the film's strength. It's impossible to get far into a discussion of Q & A without mentioning the volcanic interpretations of Nick Nolte and Armand Assante. Playing opposite those two, poor Timothy Hutton doesn't stand a chance.
Three things made Dangerous Liaisons, the 1988 Stephen Frears/Christopher Hampton collaboration, one of the best films of the decade: tremendous dialogue, an intriguing and Machiavellian plot, and top-notch performances (excepting Keanu Reeves). Cruel Intentions, a thoroughly unappetizing remake where the setting has been shifted to modern day New York and the main characters have been turned into teenagers, retains only one of those elements. Hampton's blistering, pointed dialogue has been replaced by cheap, pallid one-liners. And the likes of Glenn Close and John Malkovich have given way to unconvincing actors who can't grasp the concept that roles of this complexity require more than good looks.
