If director Roland Emmerich and the ancient Mayan calendar are to be believed, we'll all be dead in three years. In 2012, Emmerich's latest disaster epic, earth crust displacement and a unique solar alignment bring about the end of the world as we know it. (Mayans scholars, it should be noted, claim they've been misunderstood, and that their prophecies really refer to a rebirth for humanity in 2012 rather than our utter and complete annihilation. We'll see.)
It's safe to say that, as a director, Clint Eastwood shows no fear. Only a few years beyond telling the story of Iwo Jima from the Japanese point-of-view, Eastwood ventures down another little traveled cinematic avenue by making what is essentially a "French movie" (at least in terms of narrative approach and pacing) using American money and featuring a mostly English-speaking cast. And, although the movie is imperfect and unlikely to achieve anything close to mainstream acceptance, its refusal to court box office success exhibits a nobility of purpose. Additionally, it arrives without a hint of the sanctimoniousness that accompanied the release of Eastwood's preachy parable of racial unity, Invictus.
Eventually, it had to happen: a computer-animated dud. It's surprising it has taken this long, and we have been spoiled by the high quality of the product, with such winning titles as Toy Story, Shrek, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and others. But, with the death of traditional animation and the proliferation of titles in this arena, a slip in quality was inevitable. Thus far, 2005 has seen two of these movies: Robots and Madagascar. And, although Robots was mediocre entertainment, Madagascar slips a notch below that.
It's a rare thing when an individual performance defines an entire film, but it happens once or twice per year. Such is the case with Sherrybaby, the feature debut of Laurie Collyer. A simple tale of one woman's attempts to re-connect with her young daughter, Sherrybaby is elevated from the level of a TV drama by the sheer
Stuck, like many in the thriller/comedy genre, has difficulty handling the tonal shifts between humor and suspense that exist within its framework. That's not to say the movie fails - there are times when it is bitingly funny and times when its bloodiness can cause a wince and a shudder - but director Stuart Gordon is not adept at blending the two extremes into a cohesive whole. Still, the storyline and its presentation are unique enough that it's difficult not to be intrigued about where all this is going once it starts.
Alfred Hitchcock used the term "refrigerator movie" to describe certain films. According to the great director, refrigerator movies are well-paced thrillers that work effectively while being watched, but fall apart upon later examination (while "standing in front of the refrigerator"). David Fincher's The Game is an obvious member of this class of motion pictures. As it's unspooling on screen, the film is hugely entertaining, but there are several significant plot holes that grow wider the more closely they're investigated.

The plot centers around the Marchetta sisters, Tanzie (Hilary Duff) and Ava (Haylie Duff), a pair of rich, spoiled Hollywood socialites who enjoy material things such as shopping and dating, rather than caring about their late father's cosmetics company. When a major media scandal involving one of the company's products turns into an investigation, the girls find their assets frozen and must adjust to life without their fortune. Finding inspiration in Erin Brockovich, the girls decide to get to the root of the scandal. The girls use their good looks and charming personalities to win the case and prove their father's innocence. Nearly six months after the scandal began, the girls are seen leading the company, with Ava as the CEO and Tanzie working as a lab technician, with them both finding boyfriends.
