Our post-modern age makes it easy (indeed, possibly too easy) to find takes or spins or twists on traditional stories or genre films; what's often harder is finding well-executed examples of those genres in the first place. (Put more bluntly, we've all seen plenty of recent ironic crime films or teen comedies -- but how few of those actually work as crime films or teen comedies?) The British film The Escapist, which made its North American debut at Sundance this year, not only works as a brilliant, twisting existential expansion of the traditional prison break film; it also works as a crackerjack example of the traditional prison break film. Brian Cox stars as Frank, a convict serving a life sentence; after hearing of his daughter's second overdose, he determines that he has to get out, he has to see her: "I have to make things right."

Fugitive Pieces was accorded the honor of opening the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival, and it became the latest in a long line of Opening Night movies to have trouble securing a distributor. After an eight month interval after its World Premiere, the movie is being given a small U.S. Distribution by Samuel Goldwyn Films. What was worth missing in Toronto is worth missing at a local art house. In a word, Fugitive Pieces can be described as “forgettable.” The film has lofty goals, but comes across as leaden and pretentious. It’s a character study in which the lead participant is the least interesting person in the movie. There’s something inherently frustrating and unsatisfying about that. As a viewer, you want to become involved in this man’s life but the film never takes you to a point where that’s possible. This is a fatal flaw.

Towards the end of Double Jeopardy, one individual threatens another, "I'm gonna have you arrested for stupidity." I wish someone had made a similar pronouncement to director Bruce Beresford and writers David Weisberg & Douglas Cook. In most cases, I'm willing to give a film a fair amount of latitude (especially a mystery/thriller, which, by its nature, is likely to have a convoluted plot) provided that three criteria are met. First, the characters must be interesting. Secondly, the story must maintain a minimum level of credibility. Finally, and most importantly, the screenplay must not insult my intelligence. Double Jeopardy manages to fail in two of these three areas. The only point it meets is the "interesting character" one, and that's in large part because Ashley Judd is a good enough actress to be able to bring something to an on-screen personality that isn't in the script.

Message in a Bottle
For anyone who wept hopelessly at the tragic romance of The English Patient, Message in a Bottle is the movie you have been waiting for. In addition to being a beautifully-photographed motion picture with a solid (albeit melodramatic) storyline and good acting, it's also Kevin Costner's bid to once again be taken seriously in the wake of several unfortunate career choices (capped off by the disastrous The Postman). Playing the lead in a "safe" movie like this (it is, after all, based on a bestselling novel) is a wise move on Costner's part, for, while Message in a Bottle will have limited appeal among males (it's a "chick flick"), women will appreciate the way the story touches their hearts and opens their tear ducts.

My Favorite Season
Despite having taken three years to make the trip across the Atlantic, Andre Techine's My Favorite Season is surely one of the best films of the summer, if not the year. After its release in France, My Favorite Season was unable to acquire an American distributor; however, following the modest art-house success of the director's subsequent effort, Wild Reeds, the door was opened for the movie's U.S. showing. For those who enjoy rich, complex character dramas, the arrival of My Favorite Season is a cause for celebration.

Flight of the Phoenix
The 1965 version of Flight of the Phoenix is not a great movie, but it has a lot more going for it than the second-rate 2004 re-imagination. Despite using the same premise and numerous identical plot points, this remake replaces suspense with boredom and witty dialogue with lame lines any self-respecting actor should be embarrassed to utter. The only thing better about the 2004 Flight of the Phoenix are the special effects, and there are times when the computer-generated imagery isn't convincing.
