Live Free or Die
Its not the crime, its the cover-up. In small-town, hard-scrabble New Hampshire, foul-mouthed all-talk slacker John Rugged Rudgate fancies himself a criminal. When a local plumber stares him down at a pub, Rugged vows revenge, pouring brake fluid in the mans water supply. When the man dies from unrelated causes, Rugged and his side-kick, the even dimmer Jeff, try to cover up what they think is murder. One bad decision begets another.

Semi-Pro

Semi-Pro
When it comes to comedy, Will Ferrell is a Jeckyl & Hyde. When he's "on," he can be hilarious, but when he's off, he's like a drunk at a bar yelling loud, unfunny jokes at his equally inebriated buddies. And, while those guys might laugh at him, they're the only ones. Unfortunately, for Semi-Pro, Ferrell is that guy at the bar. This movie struggles for laughs, in part because the writing is lazy with too much of the humor being obvious and easily telegraphed, and in part because Semi-Pro is obsessed with being a sports film rather than merely parodying one. Admittedly, both approaches have been done so often that it's difficult to find a fresh angle, but there would seem to be more unplowed territor in the latter category than the former. Nevertheless, that's not where first-time director Kent Alterman and screenwriter Scot Armstrong take this movie. Instead of a satire, they give us a tired, tedious victory-for-the-underdog story, and the unevenness of Ferrell's comedy makes it less appealing.

Last Mistress

Last Mistress
Director Catherine Breillat is known for her racy and sometimes sexually explicit movies, many of which deal with themes of female empowerment. She has built a reputation in France as a woman for whom no subject is taboo. Her films have depicted full nudity, hardcore experiences (intercourse, fellatio, etc.), and other activities avoided by non-porn filmmakers. Breillat delights in shocking audiences, but perhaps the biggest surprise in store for viewers of The Last Mistress is how relatively tame it is. A costume drama free of many of the director's trademark excesses, this is a study of how sexual obsession can overpower true love. Perhaps it's the lack of sex or perhaps it's the incessant, banal chattering of the characters, but this movie is more likely to inspire sleep than interest. Breillat has done something I never expected from her: made a boring film.

Wassup Rockers

Wassup Rockers
Wassup Rockers could easily be seen as an attempt by maverick director Larry Clark to approach the mainstream. With Kids, Clark began his directorial career mired in scandal. (The Weinsteins had to spin off Excalibur Films because Miramax was prohibited by Disney from releasing an NC-17 production.) The film was raw, but it worked. His middling follow-up, Another Day in Paradise, was succeeded by Bully, a powerful cinematic gut-punch. Next came the colossal misfire of Ken Park, one of the recent group of movies to tread the line between hardcore sex and art. With Wassup Rockers, Clark pulls back from the edge. The movie employs his usual cinema verite style (complete with an introductory "interview" with one of the principals), and the amateur actors are playing fictional analogs of themselves, but Wassup Rockers has entered a controversy-free zone. The sex - and there isn't much - is tame and off-screen. The R-rating is a product of kids talking the way one would expect kids to talk when they hail from South Central L.A. The problem with the film is that caricatures replace characters and Clark's "tell it like it is" approach is undermined by his moralizing and ill-placed satire.
