Multimedia And Our Short Attention Spans
Would you lug your desktop or laptop computer with you wherever you go? What about your home video game system, your stereo and your entire CD collection? Would you also take all your photo albums with you wherever you are?
Probably not, as it wouldn’t really make sense to do so. It would also be a major inconvenience and just plain troublesome. There are many people, though, who simply, either by necessity or by choice, feel the need to be connected to everything and everyone at all times. Or maybe, some of us have such a short attention span that we simply can not focus on something without the pull of music or video games to lure us away from whatever we are supposed to be focused on.
There are devices which, depending on your viewpoint, either prey upon our 24 hour need to be entertained, or merely feeds an appetite shared by many. The iPod Video can play music, videos, and show and display pictures. The Playstation Portable can play video games, as well as music, movies and more. Cellular phones do much more than and and receive calls &ndash they are complete media centers in and of themselves. Today’s technology, in one sense, is far greater than the sum of its parts.
But, do we really need to have every form of entertainment with us everywhere we go, all the time? If items such as the iPod or the PSP were never developed, would society then, fret over the fact that we can’t watch our favorite movie on a 2” screen while riding the bus? Or would we just not even think about it, since the capability and accessibility to do so would have never been developed?
Maybe, because we are able to bring literally thousands of songs with us wherever we go, and always access the internet from our cell phones, that now we are addicted to convenience. We need to be able to surf, listen, burn, upload and download while waiting in line to see a movie. We have to spend our time between commercials text messaging friends from our cell phones, lest we have a free moment to do…nothing.
There is always a great hue and cry about whether or not children are over stimulated when it comes to extra curricular activities like soccer, swimming and piano. But what about when it comes to media exposure? Better yet still, what about teenagers and adults when it comes to the accessibility of entertainment? Is the new normal text messaging your friend for the time to meet up when before, you would pick up the phone and call or actually visit the friend?
When email first came out, it was hailed as the breakthrough that would free people from their desks. Now, people are frantic about checking email all the time. With the iPod, it was the ability to bring your music with you at all times. Now, music isn’t good enough, so you need video games, movies, pictures and more. If the ability for all this technology to do so much only results in asking for more and more, then is it really good for us in the first place?
Everyone Is Doing The Hip Hop Craze
Music cds and rap music were not heard of during that period, it was all about the vinyl records and rhythm and blues soul. Their music became universal music. If it weren’t for the music and the movement known as hip hop, an entire generations feeling and beliefs would have passed by without being heard. No matter if you like the hip-hop form of music or not, two things are obvious: It sells well and caters to a violent, depraved way of life.
As soon as a new artist hits the airwaves all fans start to imitate their favorite rap artists and start to dress just like them by wearing bling jewelry and clothing accessories. The prolific rise of the rap industry as a mainstay in our cultural landscape is undeniable. The hip hop and rap culture had been promoting this for decades prior and now it suddenly is main stream. A theory on urban fashion jewelry would be that Hollywood has been embracing the urban culture more and more over the years and upon rap becoming more and more mainstream to the extent of when you turn on MTV you no longer have a daily hour segment to rap videos after the hours of rock n’ roll or alternative music, but rather a total reversal where you’d be hard pressed to find any rock videos or anything besides hip hop or rap.
The biggest change is when the hip-hop stated using remixed tracks, this became all the rage and it crossed racial divides which earned the artists recognition. Hip Hop artists need to create a certain type of persona that establishes their masculinity to be accepted by the communities that listen to Hip Hop. In today’s world poets and Hip-Hop artists show their love stories in a way that allows them to maintain there respect.
Even though our culture is forever evolving, we cannot forget how we got where we are. Culture and in depth coverage of the hip hop you want is what they offer. Hip Hop has started in the late ‘70s but become much more popular in the ‘80s, Hip Hop is a mix of rapping and DJing which is mixing and scratching albums on a turntable.
Because everything in the hip hop world is out of this world, it just makes sense that it has its own clothing line. Since Hip Hop has become so popular many celebrities started their own clothing line to fill in the gap of the Hip Hop generation.
When you think of the word hip-hop most everyone associates it with music. In fact, this term has become so widely used, that the Oxford Dictionary has included it, along with “jiggy” and “phat”.
Bring Out The Songwriter In You
When I first got my guitar on my eleventh birthday, all i wanted to do was play the songs by my favourite rock bands. I brought books that taught you the tabs and chords to play for all their songs. This was a great learning curve for me, and I never had a guitar lesson. Through learning songs by my favourite bands I had ‘installed’ the ingredients of a good song in my brain. I had the instrument, I had the knowledge. It was time to start writing some songs of my own.
Do you need an instrument to write a song? Well, I think it helps. You can predict how the song will sound with the music, a lot better than maybe, humming it in your head. One of the reasons I brought a guitar was so that I could play the songs I was humming in my head. As well as guitar, a piano is a great instrument to use when writing a song. You can map out melodies better with the keys, as well as playing the chordal patterns.
Should you write the lyrics first, or the music? This is often something I contradict myself with, and it all depends on the songwriter. When bands write songs together they usually split the music and the lyrics between them. My concern is that sometimes, when you have written the music and lyrics separately, you can tell. The words sound very broken and sometimes rushed, because the singer is trying to fit the lyrics and syllables into the music.
I find the best songs I write come from jamming on a guitar or playing on a piano and singing along. Singing anything that sounds good to it. Even gibberish. Once I have the structure of the song, I then start putting meaningful lyrics in place of the gibberish. Sometimes I even keep some of the gibberish. Take the band Sigur Ros. If you have never heard of them, I suggest you legally download some of their music now. They believe the vocals are an instrument, and they treat it that way. The singer sings utter gibberish, but it sounds good. It sounds totally improvised and natural.
Another good way to get ideas for a song is to start jamming with others. Think of a little riff. It could be something at random. Get the other band members to join in with something that fits in.
Lyrics wise, I think you should do what I said. Use gibberish at first to work out the melody and syllables, then when you have finished the structure of the song, write around the gibberish!
There’s a lot of software available that aids in writing songs like Garage Band for the Mac, and Cubase for Windows.
Evanescence Tickets - Catch The Hottest New Band On The Music Scene
Evanescence tickets are not only a chance to see what many consider to be the hottest new band on the scene, but it’s also an opportunity to join a worldwide riddle. It seems that no one anywhere has had an easy time classifying this innovative act under one genre, and experts and fans alike have been trying for quite some time.
The band has been labeled as gothic rock, alternative rock, nu metal, piano rock, arena rock, wagnerian rock and just about any other type of rock imaginable. However, no one can agree exactly what they are, except that Evanescence tickets are guaranteed to provide fans with a memorable show. A look at their development may help provide you with an answer.
Band Beginnings
The band was founded in 1998 in Little Rock, Arkansas by lead singer and songwriter Amy Lee and former guitarist and songwriter Ben Moody after the two had met in a youth camp. It seems that Lee was playing the piano and Moody overheard her. The two got to talking, and they soon realized their shared passion for music.
They began to write music collectively, but there was one problem - they had no money to organize and promote any live shows. Therefore, they were left with sending out cheap demo tapes to local radio stations, and their songs got quite a bit of air time. Listeners quickly identified with their sound, and demand for live performances grew.
Making a Name
It wasn’t long before Evanescence was playing local clubs, and their ascension to stardom was meteoric. They released several EP’s and even endured some controversy in the ensuing years, which actually served them well, as they got noticed.
The band members are Christian, and they were originally thought of as a Christian rock band. However, the band disclaimed their status as a Christian rock band, which prompted Christian stores to pull their EP’s from their shelves. There was much confusion with the overall theme of their work, but that confusion remains to this day.
The band did wind up signing a major record deal, and their first big-time release, Fallen, which came out in 2003, shot up to the top of the charts. It spent 43 weeks in the Billboard Top Ten, sold over 14 million copies and went 6x platinum. However, it was after this release that Moody left the band in the middle of a European tour. The only explanation given was “creative differences,” but it was obvious to their followers that Moody and Lee were simply no longer getting along.
The band has since released two subsequent albums with much the same success, and they continue to tour relentlessly. If you’re in the mood to take in a band that the music industry can’t seem to affix a label to, Evanescence tickets are just what you’ve been looking for.
Philippe Jaroussky: The Chart Of A Counter Tenor
Philippe Jaroussky is perhaps the most prominent French counter tenor of the century. He has a voice of great power and beauty &ndash “the tone of an angel and the virtuosity of the Devil,” one French critic wrote.
But a counter tenor? It’s important to note that this is a conscious choice for the male singer. He could sing baritone or bass, but chooses to, as voice teacher David Jones phrases it, sing what is a female sound in a male body.
What does it take to enter this field? One must be both courageous and gifted, adventuresome, forward-thinking and extremely agile. The music demands consummate artistry and high hurdles for the voice. Jaroussky “seems to have endless breath, singing long extended lines with total ease,” writes one reviewer.
An Aquarius with Gemini rising, Philippe Jaroussky seems to have what it takes.
According to voice teacher, David Jones, the counter tenor is a voice type often misunderstood, sometimes thought as a ‘freak of nature.’ As to why someone would choose to do this, Jones postulates: “Perhaps this gets attention. It is certainly the aspect of the counter tenor that fascinates audiences.” Jones feels there is a definite personality type connected.
Counter tenors must develop the falsetto voice with such strength that it has power and resonance similar to a full-voiced sound. The lower the original voice, the stronger and more beautiful the falsetto. To do this, they must “hold back tremendous amounts of breath pressure with the body” and have tremendous agility.
Take a look at Jaroussky singing a Vivaldi aria as he wins 2007 Best French lyrical award. This happened at his Saturn Return &ndash of course. Here it is: .youtube.com/watch?v=9zQX2XqAE8c .
Now lets look at Jaroussky’s chart. He was born February 13, 1978 in Maisons Lafitte, France. He studied violin first, receiving a diploma in violin performance from the Paris Conservatory, department of Ancient Music. In 1996, he began vocal studies and made the decision to be a counter tenor.
Sun in Aquarius gives him the ability to span centuries and always want what’s new and different. Most of the works for counter tenors are Monteverdi (this is going waaay back), Vivaldi, Handel … Baroque. They are so old they are new. Being bored with the status quo is what Aquarius is all about. Making this decision is the sort of offbeat things Aquarians do. With that extremely objective mind and good powers of observation, he could study the field and find a niche, just quirky enough, that would really make his career go. After all, he could be just another of the hundreds, even thousands, of baritones out there.
The incredible agility is typical of Gemini rising. They are extremely active by nature. Take a look at his face and vocal movements and then listen to how fast he talks when he receives the award. It’s quick as Mercury. Gemini rising needs to be involved in many things, and all the travel this sort of career requires should be especially enjoyable to him. He went from violin, to voice, and then formed his own instrumental ensemble, Artaserse. That was something NEW he could do.
With Mercury in 14 degrees Aquarius, we seal the deal. An original thinker who enjoys shocking others. Well what were we saying. There is always fascination when we hear/watch a counter tenor. This Mercury demands mental and intellectual stimulation, and this is something to learn that requires that sort of work.
The discipline and breathwork it takes, is in the Taurus moon. Along with this incredible agility there is the steadiness and calmness. The Moon is how the person feels. While he is cavorting all over the musical scale, he’s very centered. If you watch the video you will notice that he is not the slightest bit nervous. This is a mercurial energy, not nervous energy, and it plays against a solid backbeat. We get the sense this performance &ndash extremely rigorous &ndash does not exhaust him, as it might someone with another sign and rising sign.
Enjoying being offbeat it also in his Mercury at 14 Degrees Aquarius and his Venus at 29 degrees. He even attracts friends who are exciting, different, and sometimes even odd.
With his chart, he would become angry easily if he felt he were slighted (wonder what would’ve happened had he not gotten the award), and it’s best he show it and deal with it immediately. His fluid emotional expressions would reveal that he probably does this, in a very fluid manner, which is the best style for him. He is obviously thrilled to receive the award, and would never think of hiding it.
Yes, with Jupiter in 26 degrees Gemini, he just loves a big problem to work on, and has the ability to grasp abstractions and a powerful intellect. As any voice teacher will tell you, you have to set aside ego and go after something like counter tenor, and almost from an intellectual standpoint, as it is not something that ever comes “naturally” to someone.
Philippe Jaroussky, a man to watch. And to listen to. Absolutely beautiful.
Internet Radio: A Free Format For All
The Internet has evolved and made many changes in our culture including personal MySpace pages, individual blogs, the way we trade information as well as the way the public finds and listens to music.
One of the upcoming and most popular formats is Internet Radio. Let’s discuss an Internet station, .ilike2rock.net, who promotes, plays and exclusively features independent artists and their music.
Internet radio stations have been online for more than three years and offer listeners an alternative to “subscription radio” and commercial radio because of the eclectic music formats and unique opportunities for independent bands. The music is being brought to the forefront with stations like .ilike2rock.net.
I spoke with DJ Tom of ilike2rock.net about the radio station and why it is important, not only the bands and individual artists they promote, but to the public as well.
“First and foremost, it is all about the music,” explained DJ Tom. “We offer a chance for the independent artists to submit their music free to us and to do that, they just go to our site and submit the music through a resource called “Music Submit” (we have an exclusive agreement with them). “Music Submit” allows bands and artists to submit band bios’, media kits and of course, the music, and this service in turn helps the bands by promoting them on ezines, other Internet radio stations, blogs and music related web sites.”
And .ilike2rock.com adds even more to the table. I asked DJ Tom to elaborate.
“This gives the independent band or artist a unique opportunity to be heard with free exposure on our home page to reach their target audience and a chance for the band to attain new fans. We will also showcase bands in our “Talent Showcase,” keeping the band active on our play list. We also use the artists own promotional material (blogs, YouTube, My Space) and link up with them within our web site structure and we even create ring tones for them.”
There is a free program on the site to download called “Destiny Music Player” so you can tune in to the station and other Internet radio stations. It is similar to many of the music players for computers and is very easy to use and navigate.
Tired of the same format from your local radio station? Tune in ilike2rock and you can add more than 150 (and counting) independent bands and artists to your music play list. I spoke to DJ Tom about some of the bands they play and promote.
“This is what is the most exciting to me, we play the independent bands that submit to us (and Music Submit), from all kinds of musical genres and it is a free format, for both the listener and the bands. I am very excited for all our bands and artists. Some of the bands we promote are Hypnogaja, which supplied background music for the hit television on FX called “Dirt,” Black Frog, who have played at the Sturgis Bike Rally and Hide From Cleo, one of Michigan’s hottest bands and we promote all the bands equally.”
I was very impressed with DJ Tom and I too am excited to find new bands to listen to on the Internet. After all, it is always about the music.
The Art Of Mixing Music
If a recording artist or hopeful musician has any hopes of having their songs played over the airwaves, they’ll need to have their rough mix mastered very efficiently. The best way to do this is to hire a CD mastering expert.
Professional mastering engineers are masters at their craft and can make a decent audio mix signal sound great and a good mix resonance sound completely remarkable. There are many divers things that CD mastering engineering masters can do. They will work with the artist to decide what order the songs appear on the CD, and also equalize the volume of the unconventional instruments in each song and across the entire CD.
They can also help to add more definition and clarity to the instruments in a song. Then, they will adjust the introductions and ends of the songs, choosing the length of time between the songs and adding crossfades or other nice effects if it is necessary. To read about additional audio subjects, please check out .foraudio.com.
The order in which the pieces on a CD appear can greatly affect the way the CD progresses when it’s played. If similar sounding pieces are placed side by side on a CD, it can lead listeners into thinking the artist has a very limited range. It’s ultimately up to the CD mastering designer to work with the recording artist and choose the order of pieces on the CD.
It’s very grave that the instruments in a song and the songs on the CD be at an appropriate volume level. Within a song, the divers elements must be mixed appropriately in order for the song to impression like it should.
The CD master can also give clarity and definition to the different instruments in a song. The engineer will also have the task of assuring that the volume levels across all of the pieces are the same, in order to help the CD auditory range more cohesive while still leaving room for dynamics.
The CD mastering master will also determine how much time there should be between the pieces on the CD. They will also fade and crossfasde the intros and endings of the pieces to make them have a better flow.
For an interesting profession, CD mastering is a great choice. They make excellent money, get to work with top artists, and enjoy what they do. If you like music, this specialty may be what you’ve always wanted. For those who are already in the mastering business - it’s a market unlike any other out there in the world.
4 Tips To Improve The Life Of Your Ipod
While everyone knows about the iPod and what it can do, not too many people are aware about the batteries that are located inside. Most people may assume that the batteries will simply last forever, because they are permanently attached to the inside of the iPod. Now, this assumption is incorrect on two levels. On one level, the lithium ion iPod battery that’s inside your iPod can be removed and replaced with an iPod battery replacement kit. Secondly, even though the battery never really leaves the inside of the device; that does not mean that the battery will last forever.
Now, because we now are aware of the fact that the battery won’t last forever, we need to make ourselves aware of some of the tips and tricks that can be applied in order to extend and improve the life of the new iPod battery.
TIP 1: Don’t overcharge the battery
WHY: Overcharging the battery can damage the lithium ion iPod battery itself.
EXPLANATION: With nowhere to store or displace the energy, the battery will become damaged as it attempts to keep charging even when it’s full.
TIP 2: Keep your iPod at room temperature only
WHY: Temperature plays a vital role in the function of the iPod battery
EXPLANATION: Chemical reactions take place inside the lithium ion iPod battery, and it’s those reactions that make the battery properly function. If the temperature it too cold, then the reactions slow down. And those reactions will also speed up if the temperature is too hot.
TIP 3: Only charge the iPod battery when it needs it
WHY: Charging the battery actually weakens it at the same time
EXPLANATION: Each time you recharge the lithium ion iPod mini battery, the overall charge capacity of the battery dwindles ever so slightly. By only charging the battery when needed, you are ensuring that the battery only loses its charge capacity when it has to.
TIP 4: Use your iPod on a consistent basis
WHY: Keeping it inactive dulls the battery
EXPLANATION: If you never use your iPod, the device and the battery itself can simply wear out and die. Using them on a regular basis can keep them both fresh and operational.
iPod Music Downloads - Top 3 Key Tips Enabling Positive Experiences
iPod music downloads can be a very positive experience if you know the rules of the game. With the enormous number of “unlimited music downloads” sites on the Internet, you can be overwhelmed or confused as to which one is right for you. I’ll outline 3 primary things to consider as a minimum while you make up your mind about them.
Scam Sites
The first and foremost thing to consider is whether the site you’re at is just there to take your money. Sad to say, but in the real world, there are a huge number of scam sites on the Internet. In the case of iPod music downloads, you may want to do your homework and thoroughly research a site before you reach for your credit card.
One site in particular is very attractive and shows they offer movies, games, TV shows, almost anything you want. But when you click the “Register” link to sign up, a credit card selection page appears showing a grayed out disclaimer on the bottom. If you left click and drag to highlight the paragraph you’ll find out they DO NOT host iPod downloads of any sort! In fact they’re only selling you, for $37, a list of other sites that DO offer a download service.
The disclaimer reads as follows,
“Disclaimer: This website is a database (ie: an index) to other websites that host downloads. This website does not facilitate in the download process in any way. This website is not affiliated with, nor has control over any of the websites it links to …”
It seems to me you can get what they have to offer for free using a Google or Yahoo! search for iPod music downloads like I did. So it’s best to thoroughly research the site you’re interested in before you spend your money. A Google search with the site’s name and the word scam would be a good place to start.
Quantity of Music/Video Files
The top download sites have millions of multi-media files; movies, videos, games, songs. The ones I use claim to have access to about 100 million files. Be certain to look on each site for the number of download files available in their database. You can also search the related iPod or music download forums for info on the site. If others are satisfied with their service, chances you will be too.
My account with one of the sites requires you to download a free utility which will search for songs based on the title or the artist’s name. The search results sometimes include several hundred results. Naturally a number of the results are the same song, but there is a star rating system indicating the quality of each file. The majority of the files are mp3 format but some are in WMA format.
Price
Your options for quality iPod music downloads are numerous. But if the site passed the first two tests above then you should consider the long term cost. Prominent sites like Yahoo and MSN can be very expensive. For instance a Yahoo music account will cost around $70 per year and MSN charges about a dollar per song. So your typical “unlimited music downloads” site is a bargain, since they mostly offer a lifetime membership in the 35 to $50 range.
In Summary
As with anything in life, if it looks too good to be true a lot of times it is. But in this case, the nominal fee for joining one of these unlimited music download services can be well worth it. Because, the real fact is many of them use a P2P file sharing utility similar to the one I was required to download.
The iPod music download services that use it are basically charging you the same price as the utility’s owner. So effectively, you’re getting their customer service for free. Some of them offer additional free software incentives, game downloads, and movie and video downloads included in the membership fee.
Most of the services I looked at also include free iPod music conversion software. I’m happy with my account and I download several tunes everyday. But I did my homework and researched the sites for authenticity, file quantity, customer satisfaction and price before I spent my money.
Top EDM DJ’s Of 2006:
For the second year in a row, German born Paul Van Dyk has been nominated number one DJ in the world, beating out Armin Van Burren and Tiesto by only a slim margin.
Tiesto fans are running rampid at the outrage that their almighty God did not make number one spot, which would have made it his 4th time there. Actually, Tiesto did not only fail to meet number one, he fell short of the number two spot resting comfortably at three. In my opinion I don’t think Tiesto ever should have been number one compared to the amazing talent that exists in the DJ world. Paul Van Dyk secured his number one spot this year again after having an amazing and eventfull 2006.
Paul Van Dyk released his CD titled “Politics Of Dancing 2,” which was full of hard climaxes and breaks. With Paul Van Dyk at number 1 spot, trance fans definitely don’t have to worry about house creeping up any time soon.
After 3 years of being at the number three spot, Armin Van Burren finally broke his spell and moved to number two beating out the almighty Tiesto. Armin had a busy year releasing his album “Shivers” which sent shockwaves in the trance world. Armin has won various awards such as Best Radio Show and Best Compilation for A State of Trance 2004. It is no mystery why Armin has grown so fast in the past couple years; his hard work and dedication to performing live is almost unmatched in the industry along with his passion. “This is just what I want,” says Armin. “It’s not love for music, it’s a passion, and it goes beyond liking, and beyond a hobby, it’s about a way of living. Music is essential for my life”.
